Reconnecting in the Desert: A Week of Art, Canyons, and Icons in Las Vegas
When most people think of Las Vegas, they picture flashing slot machines, endless casino floors, and wild nights. But in April 2018, my trip to the desert was about something entirely different: spending a full week reconnecting with a childhood friend and exploring a side of Vegas that goes far beyond the gambling tables.
Slowing down the pace allowed us to truly take in the sights—from the city's grandest structural wonders to the quiet, rugged beauty of the surrounding desert—all before I caught my flight down to Florida to visit Cape Canaveral with my parents.
Walking the Iconic Las Vegas Strip
We kicked off the week with the classic Las Vegas experience—walking the world-famous Strip. There is an undeniable energy to this stretch of boulevard, where every hotel is a massive, self-contained universe designed to drop your jaw. Walking side-by-side with a friend I’d known since childhood made the towering neon signs and bustling crowds feel like the backdrop of our own personal catch-up session.
A Spring Oasis: The Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Garden
Later in the week, after walking under the desert sun, my friend led me inside the Bellagio. We bypassed the casino noise entirely and stepped straight into a wonderland.

The Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens is a massive, 14,000-square-foot glass dome that transforms with the seasons. Since it was April, the entire space was dressed in its spring finest. Thousands of fresh, vibrant flowers, towering floral sculptures, and winding pathways created a living art piece. Breathing in the scent of real blooms right in the middle of a desert casino was completely surreal—it felt like stepping directly into a fairy tale.
Escaping to the Crimson Cliffs: Red Rock Canyon
To truly understand the beauty of Nevada, you have to leave the neon behind for a day. Mid-week, my friend drove us out of the city and into the rugged wilderness of Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.

The contrast was spectacular. Within minutes, the towering resort hotels were replaced by massive, dramatic cliffs of brilliant red Aztec sandstone. We explored the scenic drive, marvelling at how the stark, ancient desert landscape stood in perfect silence just miles away from the roaring Strip. Looking at those crimson mountains under the wide-open blue sky was a peaceful, grounding moment that ended up being one of my favourite memories of the entire trip.

A Touch of Italy at The Venetian
Toward the end of my trip, we made one last stop back on the Strip to visit The Venetian Resort.
Stepping inside the spectacular, grand entrance of The Venetian Resort, complete with towering waterfalls and stunning Italian architecture.
Stepping inside is like being transported straight to Italy. We spent hours wandering along the indoor canals, watching authentic gondolas glide under arched bridges while gondoliers serenaded their passengers. The beautifully painted "sky" ceiling overhead was so realistic that I completely forgot we were indoors. It was the perfect, grand finale to our week together.

After a wonderful seven days of sightseeing and catching up, it was time to say goodbye to the desert. With my bags packed, I headed to the airport for the next leg of my journey: flying down to sunny Florida to meet up with my parents for our Cape Canaveral adventure!
